Bangkok: Authorities intercept 300 kg of crystal methamphetamine smuggled across the Mekong River into Thailand. The Nong Khai Naval Border Patrol, in cooperation with other security agencies, intercepted a transnational drug trafficking gang, arresting one suspect and seizing 300 kg of crystal methamphetamine (ice), worth over 300 million baht, before it could be smuggled into Thailand. Authorities are now working to uncover the entire network involved.
According to Thai News Agency, Rear Admiral Parach Rattanachaiyapan, spokesperson for the Royal Thai Navy, revealed that late yesterday evening, the Mekong River Patrol Unit in Nong Khai (MRPU Nong Khai), in coordination with local security agencies, intercepted a drug trafficking operation in Sangkhom Subdistrict, Sangkhom District, Nong Khai Province, approximately 3 kilometers from the Mekong River.
As a result of the operation, authorities arrested one suspect and seized one vehicle and approximately 300 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, with an estimated value of 300 million baht. The suspect and the seized items were then handed over to investigators for legal proceedings, and efforts are underway to expand the investigation to include other members of the related criminal network.
Rear Admiral Parach said that the success of this arrest was the result of integrated intelligence gathering between the Mekong River Patrol Command and other security agencies, who continuously monitored and intercepted drug trafficking along the Mekong River border. This successfully disrupted transnational drug trafficking networks and prevented methamphetamine worth over 300 million baht from entering Thai society.
