Thailand Advances Data Center Sector Amid Overhaul and Expansion Plans

Bangkok: Thirty-five data centers are now operational across Thailand, with over a hundred more projects awaiting consideration. Danucha Pichayanun, Secretary-General of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), revealed the results of a recent data center meeting, urging a major restructuring, defining business size boundaries, and tightening water and electricity usage controls.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Danucha made a statement after the meeting of the Data Center Business Policy Committee No. 1/2026. The outcomes of the meeting will be used to establish comprehensive policies and guidelines for data centers, ensuring stricter oversight and defining operational boundaries. This includes a thorough review of scattered data and specific data center sizes to determine applicable criteria.

The committee's policy aims to categorize data centers based on size and industry type for clearer regulation. A specific business category for data centers will also be created. Mr. Danucha emphasized that water and electricity utilization rates must reflect both direct and indirect costs. All details will be assigned to a subcommittee for detailed consideration. Previously approved projects will undergo a permitting mechanism review to ensure uniformity and address any negative impacts.

A dedicated mechanism for data centers will be established, focusing on the long-term benefits and overseeing criteria for already implemented projects. Additionally, the committee will examine the economic viability of projects, considering infrastructure, water, electricity, digital technology, and environmental standards.

Currently, 35 projects are operational within industrial estates, with only 11 receiving BOI approval. The rest were independently approved but adhere to estate regulations. There are 49 projects under construction and an estimated 117 projects awaiting consideration with applications from private companies.

Mr. Narut Teodsathirasak, Secretary-General of the Board of Investment (BOI), highlighted continued growth in other sectors such as electronics, semiconductors, automotive (including hybrid and EV models), aerospace, and humanoid robotics.

The initiative is supported by four subcommittees focusing on economic, infrastructure, building, and environmental aspects, each chaired and managed by relevant government officials.
